THE CLASSIC COMEBACK
When John McGuinness crashed at the NW200 in 2017 you could be forgiven in thinking that his time racing could be at an end.  John had been thrown from his bike, through no fault of his own, and ended up with a broken body on of all places a golf course!
John had a long road to recovery, missing the next two TT’s due to his badly broken leg taking a long time to heal, his return to racing in the Isle of Man came at the Classic TT in 2018
Riding the Team Winfield Paton, a bike he was familiar with as he had ridden it to victory in his last Classic TT race in 2016, HE blitzed the opposition finishing the race over a minute ahead of second place
it was like he’d never been away...
5 OF THE BEST
Before the TT IN 2010 the most wins in a week at the event was four, by Phillip McCallen in 1996.  I’m sure at the start of the 2010 event even Ian Hutchinson couldn’t have imagined what lay ahead of him
This was of course the year that TT Closer to the Edge was filmed.  The Narrative between the riders was an interesting one with lots of different characters all going for the wins.
In a way Ian was a bit of an outsider coming into the TT that year having only won three TT’s previously.  he topped the leader board in most classes during practice week and so looked destined to increase his tally of wins
But as every rider knows at the TT you need a bit of luck as well as some great riding to take a win.  Ian converted all the promise shown in practicing with five wins in a week, some might say unbelievable, not Guy Martin though
That Lap
The TT in 2018 was a real coming of age year for Peter Hickman, a consistently good rider on the short circuits, he still had to show his full potential at the TT.   Race week started off badly for Peter with a DNF in the Superbike TT after having held third place at one point
He has a disastrous start to the Superstock race, having gone straight on at Braddan,  and taking the long way around the  old oak tree, he lost valuable seconds. This left him in tenth place, but he did manage to claw back to third place by the end of the opening lap.  He would go on to win the race and setup a tantalising Senior TT battle with Dean Harrison
The Senior race that year will go down as one of the greatest ever.  Dean set the pace from the start, with some blistering lap times.  He led the race for five laps, but with Hickman having targeted the mountain section as an area where he could haul back some time, it made for a captivating last lap.  Hickman took the lead at the Bungalow and never looked back, taking the victory, and setting a sensational new outright lap record of 135.452mph.  Check out the video of the lap below, mind blowing!
The mutton chopped racer
TT Closer to the Edge brought us an insight into what makes the TT races tick.  Filmed in the run up to and during the TT in 2010, it shone a spotlight on the TT’s main protagonists from that year's event
It brought the world's attention to the mutton chopped Guy Martin, whose drive for his first TT win was clear to see.  Although he had a great start to the Senior TT, swapping the lead with Conor Cummins in a titanic battle during the opening laps, it ended in disaster as he had his now infamous crash at Ballagarey on the third lap
Guy is a great character and a brilliant rider, it’s a shame he didn’t win a TT that year as he was clearly good enough.  It just shows how close the line is between victory and disaster at the TT
Fast Learner
Josh Brookes was a newcomer in 2013.  It didn’t take him long to get to grips with the TT course.  By the end of the 2013 event, he had pushed the newcomers lap record to 127.726mph
He missed the TT in 2015 & 2016, returning to ride the Norton in 2017. He started where he had left off with a top ten finish in both the Superbike and the Senior races
In 2018 and during his fourth visit to the TT he became the fastest Australian, when he set his fastest lap of 131.745mph in the Senior TT, in the process taking his best finish in the big bike category, a fifth place
